A Letter from Julie (2008) |
|---|
| Personal correspondence from my daughter sent over 30 years ago forms the basis for this digital collage. In an increasingly electronic world, the handwritten letter is becoming a lost artform, and so its usage in this digital collage is both artifactual and tinged with irony. As an archival document, the letter discloses an unseen narrative – one of distance, change and ultimately loss. Interwoven with this text are multiple layers of images both self-referential and metaphorical, which produce a painterly depth of colour and texture. These layered elements include portraits in pen and ink which reference the handwritten component of the letter. |
