A Letter from Julie (2008)
Archival Prints

Personal correspondence from my daughter sent over 30 years ago forms the basis for this digital collage.  In an increasingly electronic world, the handwritten letter is becoming a lost artform, and so its usage in this digital collage is both artifactual and tinged with irony.  As an archival document, the letter discloses an unseen narrative – one of distance, change and ultimately loss.  Interwoven with this text are multiple layers of images both self-referential and metaphorical, which produce a painterly depth of colour and texture. These layered elements include portraits in pen and ink which reference the handwritten component of the letter.
