Versions of a Letter From Michael (2008)
Archival Prints

Personal correspondence from my son sent over 30 years ago forms the basis for this series of digital collages.  In an increasingly electronic world, the handwritten letter is becoming a lost artform, and so its usage in these digital collages is both artifactual and tinged with irony.  As archival documents, the letters disclose an unseen narrative – one of distance, change and ultimately loss.  Interwoven with these texts are multiple layers of images both self-referential and metaphorical, which produce a painterly depth of colour and texture. These layered elements include portraits in pen and ink which reference the handwritten component of the letters.
